When you're child gets sick - Constantly
12:00 PM0 Comments
I don't know about anyone else but when my child is sick my heart hurts for her. I'd like to think many are already nodding their heads.

This winter has been absolutely horrible to Anastasia. If it's not one thing it's another. We were seeing her doctor pretty much bi-weekly from September to December. About the 5th visit for another respiratory problem I was seriously contemplating my mothering skills. Logically I know I'm a good mother and we are very hygienic especially with a Cat and a Dog on top of a baby who likes to eat and walk.

Hearing your child have problems breathing is an anxiety I can't fully explain. There are two things that have come up since I've joined the motherhood club. SIDS (that's cooled off as she's gotten older, only because of knowing the stats of her having issues now) and any kind of respiratory distress.

In September she was slammed with pneumonia which was a hosptial visit that made my head want to spin. From the miscommunication that this was an emergency (apparently they put her as non emergent when the nurse checking her in said Emergent. We were really worried about the entrovirus as it was making it's rounds in our county. My baby girl's breath was labored and her Osats were between 89 to 94. We spent 6 hours there when it should have been 2. We left late late at night with a diagnosis that it was just a cold (after a chest x-ray was supposedly reviewed by the radiologist). I was skeptical at best because no cold I've ever encountered sounded like my daughter did. 2 days later I get a call that they reviewed her films again and she has pneumonia significantly in both lungs the left being her worst.

Any ways I'm going on a long spiel and this isn't the point of my post. So she started out with pneumonia, it took roughly 2 weeks to clear up and 3 weeks where there was no noticeable congestion. Then 2 weeks later we hear the congestion or as I like to call it 'purring'. I'm so scientific... We started her back on her nebulizer and there was no improvement. We knew there's a possibility to get pneumonia again easier after you've already had it once. This time we didn't wait and got her in the next day after her symptoms got to this point. Prior to it was 4 days of a cold, runny nose and slight coughing but nothing that would make us worry. We found out after that trip that she had croupe. I thought pneumonia was bad, but croup just made my anxiety go through the roof. As a person with Asthma I know the feeling of not being able to breath and as you can imagine it can be scary. But at least I know when to cough to help clear my lungs. She started doing the sharp breaths and made sounds that just hurt to hear. She was struggling to breath and all we could do was nebulize her every 4 hrs and take her out to the cold in between. This worked and I really REALLY had to have Paul keep my sanity in check here. Because my mind was in flight mode and I wanted nothing more then to scoop her up and take her to the ER, begging them to help fix her. We were smart to ask our doctor when we should bring her in and those signs weren't present. Knowing those signs helped me to navigate my anxiety and not make a rash decision/ project those anxieties onto her and her situation.

When she got over her croup 2 weeks later she started again with another cold and this time a fever. Our doctor made a call and had us start her on budesonide we didn't want this to go to her lungs yet again. So she was on 2 meds. Albuterol and Budesonide (Pulmacort). During this time I struggled with knowing why this was happening all the time. I worried what her daycare would think about us as parents. I worried I was doing something wrong for her to be sick so much and with such horrible upper respiratory diseases. Did I not bundle her up enough when we took her outside, did she not have enough blankets when we had her in the car. Was the new home we moved into a problem? Were the cat and dog an issue? Did we not clean enough? This was a constant and honestly it's still on my mind.

But after a sit down with our doctor she gave us pats on the back and gave us accolades I wasn't searching for but needed to hear. I needed to hear I was a good mother and non of this was our fault. She let us know that, and let us know how attentive to her we were. That she feels she couldn't ask for better parents for a child. Then it was suggested we go to an Asthma and Allergist specialist. Suddenly all my worries kind of went away. I don't know why I didn't think of it. I have asthma and Paul has HORRIBLE allergies especially as a kid.

We're now in the process of working with her specialist and I have to say what a difference her new protocol is making. I have hopes that this regiment won't become such a part of our life. I hope that it's a temporary need as It does suck to have her on 2 nebulizer meds and singular sprinkles every day. Hoping that we can fix this and find a maintenance protocol that involves as little medication more specifically steroids as possible. But in the end whatever will help keep her lungs and her overall healthy we'll do it for however long we need to.

Having her sick this year has been a challenge, another one I didn't anticipate being such a personal hurdle for me to overcome. We now feel like seasoned veterans and I can truly see how people who have second children are so much more relaxed because they've been through it once before. They know the drill, there's a little less unknown from that perspective.

New Printable Available - Food and Activity tracker (for weight watchers)
8:46 AM 3 Comments
I've been working on this design and decided to have it match the first two printables I made available to everyone. I'm really loving the color mix and want to continue using this specific design theme  for my free printables.

The new printable is a weight watchers food and activity tracker. I have been really wanting to track what I eat and frankly tracking electronically, while convenient I just don't find I have the same kind of accountability. So I wanted to make something that would bring me back to when I first started the program roughly 5 years ago. I also did some research to make sure I wasn't dating my tracker.

Hopefully this tracker can help you on your way to a healthier you. Stay tuned for a measurements tracker in the coming weeks. I'm hoping to have a decent collection for a fitness journal. If you have any suggestions on worksheets you'd like to see please feel free to suggest it.

The battle continues.
11:03 AM0 Comments

The Diaper change battle that is. I know so many parents experience the same issues I do.

Lets lay out the scenario: You have a not so pleasant diaper on your hands and all your child wants to do is kick, add in the occasional scream (okay likely more than occasional) and twist their bodies in ways you never thought humanly possible. You're there holding their legs hoping that one foot doesn't come loose and go crashing down on the mess that lays before you. Because as a parent your mind is 3 steps ahead of this scenario. If that foot falls it not only means a rogue leg that could cause unruly havoc but it means yes there's now a mess on your child's body. You don't put the clean diaper under just yet there's a slight chance that too could become a victim of becoming dirty way before it's time. Which then means a bath at the  and if you're in a hurry to go somewhere and or DON"T have any kind of a faucet handy you would rather not have to do a wet wipes ' bath. Also, see that blanket beside her just within her reach? Well that now becomes an accomplice just asking to get dirty as well.So we hold onto those tiny legs, trying to entertain our child, by silly faces, their favorite show and maybe just maybe you'll be lucky and it's time for them to have a bottle. In my case I'm guilty of giving her two ounces if I know it's going to be one of those changes.

I have to admit since this phase started I've tried to be armed. I take things I know she will find entertaining and I try to bribe her with them. Only to then hope that it keeps her attention for as long as the change takes place. Normally it takes 3 different distractions to finish a change.

We've also had some fun battles with applying the desitin. For some reason it's become a fun game for Anastasia to as I'm applying, move, kick and giggle while she does it. Well that's great sweetie but you now have desitin between your toes and on your thighs. Not it's intended destination dear not to mention a bit of a pain to take off.

So changing has become this strategic game of put in reach what you want her to get and remove ALL other temptation. Don't move it a few feet away this will cause your child to twist in the ways I mentioned before to try and reach it, whatever the cost may be, whatever the cost.... Also, what you do want her to play with you have to make sure it's not in a place that will cause her to move too much. It's all about the balance ;) . We'll call it a rather hilarious dance to an outsider watching as we prepare, execute and sometimes cry at our failed changing attempts.

But the battle continues and I find myself getting more and more creative. My ever moving child I will win this war ;)

Anastasia Update - 1/29/15
4:52 PM0 Comments

When did you get to be this grown little girl?
It's been almost 3 months since I've done an update on Anastasia.

Her growth in only a few short months astonishes me, pretty much every time I gush about it. I'll admit I never 'got' why parents were so over the moon about the smallest things. Then I had a little girl who I got to teach those things to and it all changed for me.

The rate that she picks up on things makes my heart melt. She repeats "one, two, three" or will chime in when we're about to say three. Pretty neat if I do say so myself. She'll now come up to us and sign + say "please" with this huge grin on her face. I can't tell you how much I LOVE that she's learned manner minded words. She's so proud of herself especially when she says please. I like that she both signs and says it, we were worried that she'd just stick to signing and not verbally say what she wanted. So now we get a lot of "More" "Apples" (well App - el) lol and "Please" often used together ;).

Also when did my kid start pushing me out the door when we drop her off at daycare? Kind of made me do a sad face when I handed her over to her Daycare provider. Right after we did she starts waving and saying "Byeeee" "byee". Now I admit I'm happy she's not having a crying fit but lets make this a slow transition kid!

I have to admit for our family teaching her to sign has been a great decision. It's allowed us to bridge the gap in her communication skills and what she wants. Knowing what she wants and not having to play the guessing game is a huge relief.

Oh and still to this day she LOVES the bath. As soon as we mention it she just runs around saying "Baah" "Baah!" pulling at her clothes trying to take them off. What a peach she is.I have a feeling she's forever going to be my little mermaid.

There are times when I cuddle with her that I whisper to her "Never grow up." By that I mean I hope she never looses her zest for life, giggling for no other reason because she's happy. Bouncing her ball and feting so much enjoyment out of us passing it back and forth to her. Splashing in the tub making our shirts soaked from all the fun.

You're a photographer?
9:01 AM0 Comments
You'd think for being a photographer I'd take better 'blog' photos. Next to the portrait sessions I've done with Anastasia. For this I'm a bit ashamed that most of my blog is filled with quick cell phone photos. That's going to change this year. Especially with the blog focus being on family but also our home improvements it'll be nice to look at better quality photos to go with the content that will be filling up this blog.

A beautiful thunderstorm I captured

So with that I'm sorry readers for not showing my photography talents to it's extent. I take pride in the photos I take and I should really deliver that here as well. But fear not changes are in the works and I'm hoping you'll come to enjoy the new look of our blog and the overall atmosphere. I'll admit most of my photos are taken on my phone out of convenience. Snap a photo and it automatically uploads to my gmail photo account. I don't have to do anything it's right there for when I need it for a blog post. For shame, I promise to do better.

Happy Tuesday Everyone! Hope your day is safe and fun.

Reading Corner - Part 1 Gutter book shelf
11:04 AM0 Comments

As you've seen in my previous post we've begun our house projects. The first project we're tackling is Anastasia's reading corner. Step one was putting up her book shelves. We wanted something that would display her book covers and make it a fun little corner. Pinterest provided many ideas but the one that stood out for me was the gutter book shelf. I loved how elegant it looked on the walls.

Paul and I visited our local everything shop and managed to find gutters. With only two options I was glad to find the exact one I had in mind. We wanted to go with a plastic gutter and the reason was if Anastasia was to ever grab a hold of the shelf she wouldn't hurt or get her hands cut. For this project we wanted the shelf to be at a fair height for when she can later on go up and grab the book of her choosing. Right now we have up shelf 1 of 2.

One big gutter will be doing 2 shelves. at roughly 2.5 feet per side. This project has costed us a total of $47

Shopping list. (2 x book shelves)

1 - gutter - 10 ft long - $5.49
2 - corner gutters - $9.99 each
2 - Gutter Hidden hanger - $2.59 each
4 - End Caps - $1.69 each
2 - Shelf brace package (4 per package) - $4.59

After putting everything together Paul has thought of some possible improvements to make on the design and to cut down on materials as a whole.

"Oh Christmas Tree" - Where are you!?
10:25 AM0 Comments

For those who know me, you know I love Christmas. So much so that I try to hold onto the spirit well into summer time if I can manage it . This means at minimal that I normally still have the tree up. Not without some kind of comments from my husband mind you.

This year however I took it down Jan 2nd. Some may be rushing to my home to take my temperature, but I assure you it was done with good reason. The tree unfortunately was taking up prime real estate that we needed to begin our first home improvement project of 2015. First home improvement project yet I believe. So with tears in my eyes the tree had to come down. Okay not real tears but it went against everything I normally do.

No sooner was the tree down did we start what will become Anastasia's toy and reading corner. With pinterest's help we're well on our way to having a comfy and cozy spot for Anastasia to play and where we can read to her. The toys especially needed a new home then being put right in front of our L couch. I was getting tired of having no organization when it came to her toys. We still need to figure out some sort of organization for her toys but for now they at least have a corner to go to at night. YAY, mommy for the win!

We've started phase 1 and that's putting up gutter book shelves. I realize the name isn't to appealing but I promise you the finished look is absolutely darling! I was a little picky with the gutters as I wanted a bit of a contoured line design. So it took a little bit of looking in our tiny everything store in town. But we found it and Paul was more than happy to help get the project moving.

So that's what we're doing right now. I'll update as things progress. I'm even using my handy dandy project planning sheets that I designed. I love these things, as we'll have home improvements documented, how much time and money we spent and be able to have  a sense of accomplishment. Don't forget these worksheets are available free for download: HERE.

For an in depth look at how we did the first shelf please visit our post Gutter Book Shelves.
